TRADITIONAL COUNTRY

Hornsby Park is Ngurra. A place of gathering and connection.

Hornsby Park sits on the traditional lands of the Dharug and GuriNgai peoples. Ngurra is Dharug for country.

For thousands of years, this valley has been a place of gathering, ceremony and connection.

In the Dreaming, the Creator Spirit shaped the rivers, ridges and valleys – bringing life to the trees, animals and people. Creating sacred places still cared for today.

Before European settlement, the valley’s creeks, plants and animals provided abundant resources. It was a place for hunting and gathering, storytelling, women’s gatherings, ceremony and teaching.

Nearby rock shelters, engravings, grinding grooves and middens show the deep and continuous cultural connection of Aboriginal people to this Country. Hornsby Park is part of a network of ancient trails and songlines linking communities across the region.
